Man Busted for a ZUI

|

No, “ZUI” is not a typo.

Not two blogs ago I wrote about a man who got arrested for a DUI on a street sweeper. I also said that it never ceases to amaze me what vehicles people get caught drunk driving on. That continues to remain true as a man was arrested last week after being arrested for driving drunk on a Zamboni.

Steve Anderson, a part-time worker for the Fargo Park District as a Zamboni driver, was arrested for operating a Zamboni while under the influence in Fargo, North Dakota. Anderson, at the time, was cleaning the ice during a high school girls’ hockey game.

According to KFGO radio, a spectator of the hockey match noticed that the Zamboni was weaving around the ice rink in an “erratic” manner. The spectator alerted the Fargo South Sports Arena staff who then called the Fargo Police Department.

Using the hashtag “bumperzamboni,” the spectator tweeted, “Let’s just say I’ve never seen a Zamboni have so much trouble around the edges.”

“I’ve been here for 22 years … and we have not had an incident like this before,” Jim Larson, the director of finance and human resources for the Fargo Park District, which operates the arena, told Inforum.com. “I don’t want to in any way dismiss how serious this is … We’ll review the situation to determine how this happened and what we can do to make it even more fool proof.”

In North Dakota, it is irrelevant that Anderson was not on a public road. According to North Dakota law, a person only needs to be operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol to be arrested for a DUI.
