“Have A Plan” and Prevent a DUI

|

I know I write a lot about smartphone apps dealing with blood alcohol levels, checkpoints, DUIs, etc. However, I’d be remiss not to inform people of new ways to prevent a DUI when I’m made aware of them.

New York’s Washington County Sheriff’s Office have launched a free smartphone app which encourages people to “have a plan” to get home safe when they may be impaired by alcohol or drugs.

The “Have A Plan” app includes of many of the individual features that other DUI prevention apps have all rolled into one; finding a cab using GPS, preloading a list of possible designated drivers, a BAC calculator, a DUI reporting feature, and various motor skills games to assess impairment. In addition to these features, the app also includes a list of facts and myths about DUIs.

“The ‘Have A Plan’ app will be important in the effort to prevent impaired driving,” said Undersheriff John Winchell. “We want people to enjoy themselves, but we also want them to get home safely. This app helps its users do that by placing a tool in the hands of a potentially impaired driver to find a safe way home.”

Some features, such as the taxi locator and the report a DUI, are specific to New York. That doesn’t mean that the other features can’t be used in other states, although you can probably find individual app for those features.

The app was developed by Staples Marketing and the Special Traffic Operations Program for Driving While Intoxicated (STOP-DWI) which gives New York county governments to coordinate local efforts to reduce alcohol and drug related traffic collisions. Funds for the app’s development were provided by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

Who knows? Maybe California app developers will soon come up with a California specific DUI app with all of the features of the “Have A Plan” app. Until then, use whatever other resources at your disposal to prevent California DUIs.
