Advice From The Urinal

|

Michigan has begun implementing a new innovative and rather unconventional DUI deterrence technology.

“Interactive Urinal Communicators” are advice-giving urinal cakes. Let me be perfectly clear, these are motion detection, talking urinal cakes. What do they give advice about? They remind the bathroom goer to not drink and drive with a message that says, “Listen up. That’s right, I’m talking to you. Had a few drinks? Maybe a few too many? Then do yourself and everyone else a favor: Call a sober friend or a cab. Oh, and don’t forget to wash your hands.”

If the fact that the urinal is talking to you isn’t enough to grab your attention, maybe it will be if the message come from the voice of an attention-getting female voice.

At a cost of $21 per cake, the price tag isn’t inexpensive. Fortunately, federal traffic safety funds fronted the cost for 400 cakes to be distributed to 200 restaurants throughout Michigan prior to the 4th of July festivities.

Michigan Licensed Beverage Association Executive Director Scott T. Ellis stated, “At first it may be seen as humorous, but the seriousness of the message will stand out and encourage patrons to find a safe ride home.”

It has yet to be determined how effective the cakes were in deterring drunk drivers over the 4th of July holiday. However, if you find yourself being told not to drive drunk by a urinal while relieving yourself, you might be able to assume that the cakes were a success and made their way to a restroom near you.
